Frequently asked questions.

What is Scar Camouflage?

Also known as Skin Repigmentation, Micropigmentation, Corrective Pigment Camouflage. This process helps blend scars and marks on the skin with the surrounding skin by implanting personally mixed pigment back into the skin using a Rotary Tattoo Machine and sterile, single-use needles.

Who can benefit from Scar Camouflage Tattoo?

People who have burn scars, surgery scars, self-harm scars, people with hypopigmentation (not to be mistaken with hyperpigmentation), stretch marks, plastic surgery scars, injury scars, congenital anomalies, vitiligo (in remission), birth marks, port wine marks (after doctors approval). With that said, each person’s skin as well as each mark and scar is different so it is strongly advised you book a consultation where we plan out your personal journey in this process and verify that you are a viable candidate.

What is the difference between the pigments used in Paramedical Tattoo and those used in Traditional Tattoo Art?

Scar Camouflage is done using pigments that have much smaller pigment particles than one would use in Traditional Tattoo Art. The larger particles are not always the most desirable to use in this process because that means more intense color, and the body takes longer to break it down. This would make the color denser, more opaque, resulting in a less natural result. This is also one of the reasons why multiple sessions yield the best results, because you are essentially implanting layers to give the illusion of natural skin.

How long is the downtime after a scar camouflage procedure?

You can go back to work the same day! We will go over proper aftercare to make sure that you are not risking infection, and we will go over how to ensure a healthy and successful healing process. Lost your aftercare instructions? Click here to access the aftercare information.

How many sessions does it usually take?

Everyone’s scars and skin types will be different so going off of someone else’s number of sessions is rarely relative. Multiple sessions yield the best results, because you are essentially implanting layers to give the illusion of natural skin. Some may require 3 sessions and some may require more depending on the person’s immune system, skin type, severity of scar and intensity of the area’s color difference. We also want the ink to fade slightly and blend as quickly as possible, while still maintaining the color without harsh lines or edges. The way to achieve that is by doing multiple layers while allowing the skin to heal, and the pigment to settle in between layers. If all layers were to be done at once, it could result in a muddy, unnatural appearance.

Is it painful?

Similar to a traditional tattoo, we are implanting pigment into the dermis of the skin, however we focus on not going as deep as Traditional Tattoo, if we were too, the color will be more dense and harsh. Possibly because of this different technique, many claim it is not as painful as traditional tattoos. With that said, some areas are more painful than others, so in your consultation we can go over options for using any type of numbing cream.

Can I use numbing cream before?

It is not desirable to use numbing creams while receiving scar camouflage for a couple reasons. One being that it blanches the skin, making it harder to match the skin tones of the surrounding area. The other is that it can increase your risk of allergic reactions. If you are having a procedure in an area that is much more painful, we can discuss numbing cream options at your consultation.

What happens if I tan after getting a scar camouflage tattoo?

Many are concerned about tanning after getting a scar camouflage procedure. We always promote healthy sun protection in any regards, it is also important for the longevity of your tattoo. We especially advise against excessive tanning and use of tanning beds. Despite that, if you were to tan at all just from general life, or say its summer and you are just spending more time outside, the tattooed area will still be closer in color to your skin than it was previously. The skin area that was tattooed will also slightly shift with tanning, (remember because our pigments use smaller particles it is less dense and intense than traditional tattoo inks) So there is no need to worry that you will end up looking like a leopard or zebra in the summer!

How long does the tattoo last?

If you follow the aftercare instructions well and do not excessively expose your tattoo to the sun without sunscreen or sun protection and you don’t use harsh anti-aging lotions, treatments on the area your tattoo should last a long time and not require a touch up further down the road. If it does shift or fade, whether that is due to aftercare or just your personal immune system, there is always an option for a touch up.

What sort of safety measures are in place to ensure I have a safe experience?

The area where we perform the tattoo procedure is cleaned in between each client as well as any piece of equipment, (up to current Bloodborne Pathogen and Health Department Standards), and only single-use, sterile products are used for each client to further avoid cross-contamination. We practice high standards of hygiene to ensure that every person that comes in is protected.

How long are the sessions?

This varies as some marks and scars are larger than others. At your consultation we will go over this for your personal situation making sure you know how much time to set aside for your appointment.

Who is scar camouflage NOT recommended for?

  • People who suffer from hemophilia, epilepsy and seizures. Currently suffering a cold or flu.

  • Those who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Those currently experiencing an acne outbreak in the area, active eczema, psoriasis.

  • Those who have keloid or hypertrophic scars.

How much does it cost?/ Do I have to pay all at once?

Each scar and case is different, some biggers than others, some darker than others, so the pricing may be slightly different case by case. Once we go over your goals at the consultation and we have a look at what we are working with, you will have be informed on how much your process could cost. Fortunately, we can work out a payment plan if you would like, just let us know.
